The 36th iteration of Wrestlemania takes place this weekend, and due to the absolutely bonkers state of affairs in the world currently, it’s going to take place for the first time without an audience. Over at Ultimate Classic Rock, I took a look at the first time the pro wrestling showcase took place, at Madison Square Garden on March 31, 1985.
There were dozens of participants that day, from the pro wrestlers in the ring like Hulk Hogan, “Rowdy” Roddy Piper and Ricky Steamboat to special celebrity guests like Liberace and Muhammad Ali. Sadly, many of them have passed away in the 35 years since the inaugural event in New York City, while some continue to thrive both in an out of the sports entertainment arena.
