Foo Fighters returned to the big stage last night with a headlining slot at Boston Calling, a gig three years in the making. Delayed twice; first by the pandemic and then the tragic passing of drummer Taylor Hawkins, the loss of the latter hung in the air all night long, with frontman Dave Grohl doing his best to put a hopeful and contemplative spin on approaching the band’s music in a fresh and often melancholic manner.
“Ladies and gentlemen, we appreciate you being here very much tonight,” he began early in the set ahead of the hit “Times Like These.” “It’s different now. To see you, to sing these songs to you…‘cause a lot of them mean something new now.”
Hawkins died following a South American gig the Foos did in March 2022 after being found unresponsive in his Bogotá, Colombia hotel room. He was just 50 years old. All scheduled activity for the year, including headlining Boston Calling, was immediately cancelled. The band had first been tapped to top the festival’s bill back in 2020, right before Covid-19 put everyone on lockdown….
