The fine folks over at Ultimate Classic Rock have run an exclusive excerpt from my book Depeche Mode: All That’s Left to Know About the World’s Finest Synth-Pop Band, which lands on shelves December 28 and is available for pre-order here. The passage details the time around the release of the group’s 1990 mainstream breakthrough effort, Violator, when they scheduled an album signing at The Wherehouse in Los Angeles. The band expected a handful of fans to show up at the record store, but more than 17,000 showed up, causing a near riot and leading local police to deploy SWAT-like support.
