It’s been about nine years since I waxed on my affinity for Local H in this space. TLDR: I’ve followed them since college; they were one of my (if not the) first in-person interviews I did; I’ve probably seen them more than any other band – save for The Afghan Whigs/Greg Dulli-related projects – and have interviewed them the most (this is highly likely).
Over at Vanyaland, I’ve covered them and talked to frontman/guitarist Scott Lucas more times than any editor would like. There was a weird “Going A to H with Scott Lucas” that I did back in 2013. That was to preview a show that didn’t happen because Lucas was assaulted and robbed in Russia right before it was scheduled, and I got the exclusive on that situation. Later that year, I had to follow up on his recovery and discuss his new side project, Scott Lucas & The Married Men.
We cooled it for a bit, but then Lucas reunited with original drummer Joe Daniels in 2016, providing me with a swell of collegiate nostalgia and leading me to sit down with both of them. A few months later, Daniels was back out, but Local H had won a contest to open a handful of Metallica’s stadium shows that summer. Giving V-Land a break, I covered the contest win for Loudwire, and then when the shows were over, talked to Lucas about it for the metal-leaning publication.
This year saw the release of Lifers: A Local H Movie, which is part concert film, part vignettes of going to a gig, and the scenarios that play out while the band is onstage. Lucas wrote, directed, and edited the film and is currently touring around the country showing it in movie theaters, including Boston this evening at Coolidge Corner Theatre. And despite all the interviews we’ve done over the years, he never sat down for a Vanyaland 617 Q&A, so this provided the perfect opportunity. We talked about the movie, obviously, the upcoming Local H vinyl releases, and why he didn’t like the recent Led Zeppelin doc.
Check out the interview, and here’s a teaser trailer for the film:
