The last time I saw Thievery Corporation, it was at The Wiltern in Los Angeles in 2023. They just happened to be in town at the same time I was there to see AFI celebrate the 20th anniversary of their landmark Sing the Sorrow LP by playing it in full. But even though that weekend revolved around that event, experiencing the myriad of sounds, from sitar-inflected Indian vibes to fast flowing hip-hop to the more slowed trip hop, there was something to disappear into – even if just for a couple of hours.
Tonight, the band plays in Boston at the House of Blues, which also promises to be special as frequent collaborator Mr. Lif gets to perform in front of his hometown. I did a brief preview over at Vanyaland, and below is the title track to my favorite album by Thievery Corp, and one of their most underrated, Culture of Fear.
