Filter’s Richard Patrick on Supermodels in the ’90s, Nine Inch Nails, and His Brother’s Films

Backstage in the dining area last night at The Xfinity Center, I’m sitting down to dinner with Jeff Gutt, the singer from Stone Temple Pilots – which is an absolutely bonkers way to start a story, I realize this – and we’re talking about the Vanyaland 617 Q&A he did with me recently.

He mentions how hard it was to be put on the spot and list his seven favorite replacement singers. I tell him, “Yeah, I was interviewing Richard Patrick from Filter, and his seven was listing his favorite films his brother made, and he blanked at first.” Richard’s brother, Robert, is an actor who is best known for playing the evil Terminator in Terminator 2: Judgement Day.

We move onto another topic and at one point Gutt says, casually, “Oh, there’s Richard now.” But it doesn’t register. I’m clueless. Anyway, even if I wasn’t, what would Richard Patrick be doing at an STP show? I don’t even turn around. I figure he’s just talking out loud and sees someone named Richard he knows. Singers are a weird breed.

Cut to a few hours later, Stone Temple Pilots are in the last few songs of their set and bassist Robert DeLeo says they have a surprise and bring out Richard Patrick, and they cover Filter’s “Hey Man Nice Shot.” Suddenly, it dawns on me how much of a dummy I am.

Here’s a brief clip I took of the performance.

Then I realize how I was sitting in the same room with two artists from two different bands who have taken part in the 617 Q&A, which is pretty wild. Anyway…here is that interview with Richard Patrick, who played Xfinity Center tonight as part of the Freaks on Parade tour with Rob Zombie, Alice Cooper, and Ministry.
