First of all, it must be said that that headline got a chuckle out of Jeff Gutt, who has been the singer for Stone Temple Pilots since 2017. I sat down with him recently for a Vanyaland 617 Q&A where he talked about his resiliency in an unforgiving industry, one where his alternative was going home to Michigan and epoxying floors for a living.
The frontman has been on a journey like few others, one which involved his band getting signed by a major label right when filesharing and the impending death of nu-metal left said act suddenly unappealing, two stints on The X Factor, and a very, very long wait in being able to tell people he was going to be the new singer for STP. Add all that to the fact he was joining a group which had been dealt seemingly the worst luck on the planet and it’s understandable why he might want to book a cross-country flight back to the land of thankless manual labor.
Thankfully it didn’t happen, as Gutt has proven to be a stabilizing force in Stone Temple Pilots and led to them being able to co-headline sheds this summer with Live, the Pennsylvania alt-rock outfit who are a complete disaster themselves these days.
We covered a bunch of that in our interview, as well as who his favorite replacement singers in the world of rock have been over the years. Check it out. And below is a live clip of Gutt handling STP’s “Interstate Love Song” back in 2018 effortlessly.
