Walking Through the Fire Together with Gavin Rossdale of Bush

Being under the weather is never fun, so imagine having to get up in front of thousands of people night after night and appear as if you’re right as rain. That’s what Gavin Rossdale had been doing for a spell with his band Bush, leading to our interview getting pushed back a few times as he recovered. Thankfully, as he told me when we finally sat down together, “I’m back now.”

It’s been an interesting run for the band, who first exploded into the mainstream in the early ’90s with the hit single “Everything Zen” from the Bush debut album Sixteen Stone. That LP turns 30 this year and Rossdale is looking back with Loaded: The Greatest Hits 1994–2023 compilation album by the band. Right in the middle of those years, he took a decade break from Bush, launching another outfit in Institute and doing the obligatory solo album.

During our chat, which was for a Vanyaland 617 Q&A, Rossdale hit on a range of topics. He talked about not wanting to be labeled as a ’90s band, the controversy surrounding the 2001 Bush album Golden State in the wake of 9/11, and, having starred with him Constantine, revealed his favorite Keanu Reeves films.
