Australian indie outfit Middle Kids have been a group I first dialed into back in 2016 when I was eyeing up bands to catch at that year’s Iceland Airwaves music festival. Their song “Edge of Town” grabbed me instantly, and I couldn’t wait to see and interview them in the 101.
Unfortunately, life had a different agenda than mine.
There was a lost voice, lost luggage and a lost opportunity to experience the group that left me a bit bummed until all was rectified when they came to Boston as restrictions on the pandemic began to lift. Now, they’re coming through again, this time as support for the co-headlining Manchester Orchestra and Jimmy Eat World tour.
Ahead of the show in Boston at MGM Music Hall, I sat down with singer Hannah Joy for a Vanyaland 617 Q&A to get down to what exactly went wrong on that Iceland, covering Olivia Rodrigo and what comes to mind when thinking about famous middle children. Below is the song that first turned me onto the trio, and be sure to check out the interview.
